Designing the case part 1: So my first step was to double-check what those dimensions were. Many of which are available from formfactors. Strangely they don’t have the newest ATX revision v2. The physical dimensions haven’t changed in many years but it’s good practice to work with the latest version of a spec. Few things of note though, while it’s good to adhere to the spec as much as possible to maintain compatibility, it’s also necessary to be aware of how other manufacturers deviate from it in practice to make sure whatever you’re designing will work in the real world.

For example, the ATX spec officially only allows for a housing with a mm depth. But anyone who’s shopped for ATX power supplies knows that almost all the higher-end units are mm deep or more. The height, width, and mounting holes are the same though so I’ll just use the figure 12 from the ATX spec for reference. Aug 9, , 3: They have an v AC to 12v DC converter. I’m using it to power 3 Scythe S-Flex mm fans. I used the chrome grill guards on each side of the fan and bolted them to the back of my cabinet. I used a dremmel to make the round fan holes. They also have AC power fans too. I had picked up 2 of them before I started but then decided I wanted more cooling and quieter fans. My AV cabinet is split into 2 sides, and each side has one shelf. I ended up using 5 fans total.

The 3 Scythes are on the back of the cabinet very quite too and I used the 2 AC fans moderate noise and mounted them via screws underneath 2 of the shelves which I also dremmel out round wholes to match the fans. I have a Cable Co.

If you’ve paid much attention to current power supplies then you’ve probably noticed that most of them have more than one 12 volt rail. A conventional dual rail ATX12V power supply has two 12 volt rails: EPS power supplies can have as many as four 12 volt rails and have many combinations of which rails powers which devices. If a PSU needs more 5 volt power then they just build a higher-capacity rail which can supply more current.

But the problem is, I can’t afford a power supply that can provide enough amps through a single 12v rail. If I buy a power supply that has dual 12v rails, can I wire them together in order to provide enough amps to the TEC? I won’t have anything else hooked to this power supply, only the TEC. You might be able to parallel the two power supplies to increase the overall output current, but in general that may not work.

There are two potential issues — stability and output voltage. Stability can be a problem because you will have two separate switching power supply loops that are both trying to stabilize the output voltage, and they can talk to each other and cause oscillations or even worse, overvoltages. The second problem is that each of the two power supplies can only pull the output rail up, and will only pull up supply output current if they see that the rail is at or below the output voltage that they are trying to get to.

So if one supply’s output voltage stand-alone is Paralleling power supplies in the general case is a pretty difficult problem, and requires some extra circuit features to make it work reliably.
